What Is Safety Glass?

Safety glass is a form of glass that is specially engineered to be less prone to breakage and less likely to cause damage when shattered. Toughened and laminated safety glass are the two major forms. Both are produced and supplied by Al-Thiabi Glass using strengthening processes.

Toughened glass

Toughened glass is strengthened by increasing the rate at which it cools. This raises the tensile strength of the glass, making it less prone to fracture from heat, wind or impact. When toughened glass breaks, it shatters into small cubes, reducing the chance of injury. Toughened glass cannot be cut or drilled after processing, and while strong, it is less secure than laminated glass.

Thanks to its strong resistance to force and its light weight, toughened glass is commonly used in shower screens and doors, car side windows, glass doors and tables, diving masks, and a range of cookware and tableware.

Laminated glass

Laminated glass is made by sandwiching a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) between panes of glass and fusing the unit together with heat and pressure. The PVB interlayer holds the glass in place, preventing the unit from falling apart on impact. By changing the thickness and colour of the interlayer, laminated glass can also limit solar heat, UV radiation and glare. Because of its shatter-proof nature, it is often used in skylights, vehicle windscreens and shop fronts.
